Discover Sarlat, a medieval town of art and history

Walking through Sarlat takes us on a trip into the past. Every street is an open window into history. Its 14th century half-timbered houses form a tableau vivant. Along the narrow streets, there is unexpected charm at every corner.

The decorated timber framed façades take us back to a time when crafts and elegance were highly valued. The paved streets lead to the central square, place de la Liberté, which is surrounded by magnificent architecture.

Saint-Sacerdos cathedral dating from the 12th century stands proudly at the heart of Sarlat. Its gothic architecture and sculptured details make it an emblematic gem. The Manoir de Gisson adds an aristocratic tone to the town, revealing a story of noble families and medieval intrigues.

The ramparts of Sarlat, with their imposing towers, remind us that in past centuries Sarlat was a town of strategic importance. The great doors of la Comédie and of la Boétie invite visitors to cross the threshold and go back into time.

Markets and good food in the old town through the seasons

The Sarladaise gastronomy is displayed in all its glory in the markets. Its wide range of flavours changes with the seasons:

In spring, the stalls are laden with the freshness of the first asparagus, young salad, and crunchy radishes. The café terraces are animated, tempting visitors with their fresh and colourful dishes.

During the summer months, the market is dazzling with the bright colours of red berries, juicy tomatoes and aromatic herbs.

In autumn, Sarlat celebrates the richness of the earth with freshly gathered ceps, chestnuts and walnuts.

Winter brings comforting seasonal products to the markets. Truffles make their appearance on the stalls. Grilled chestnuts, delicious potatoes and cheeses bring warmth to the streets of Sarlat. It is also the season for walnut oil production.

You can raise a glass from the region at each meal: wines from Domme, Bergerac, Monbazillac, Cahors etc.
